Do you every stop to wonder what it may be like if someone could actually SEE inside your thoughts?! I do, and I’m absolutely positive they’d be straight up scared! From the second my eyes open in the morning, my brain is “on”. What if this, and what about that and wouldn’t this be a cool shape for workshop..(while 12 versions of the shape all simultaneously take form), what’s today’s date?, where’s my planner?, I’ll work for 2 hours then do the laundry, uh the dog needs to go out, what time is it; online church starts in 7 minutes, make the list of all the things that need created for retail this week…. and it just goes on like that; I’m both acutely aware of it and it also feels as if it runs just in the background. But! so so many of the things that run through my mind never, ever get put into action. Poster child for overthinking, overanalyzing right here. I’m great at concept and ideas. Not so great at action, implementation. However, I know it, so I can affect it right?…….ideas without execution are simply ideas.
In the last few months, I’ve been steadily asking God to please show me “what’s next”, not that I don’t always ask for Him to lead my steps as I go thru my days, but diligent focus and then actually trying to be quiet enough to listen! Oh how I struggle with the being quiet part. Here’s the thing I kept coming back to time after time “You know what to do; so DO IT”. I know right?!? No neon sign with instructions, no flash of light and a immediate epiphany, just “you already know; so dddooooo it. Easy enough right – ugh! Scary! That is truly the crux of it – FEAR! I started asking myself….”WHAT are you afraid of?” and boiled it down to basically two things:
- Failure – “What if I fail, but oh, darling what if you fly” –Eric Hanson and NOTHING hurts a failure like a try!
- What people will think/say? I learned long ago (apparently I forgot)… it is none of my business what other people think, and frankly “those who matter won’t mind and those who mind do not matter.” -Dr. Seuss And truly, the people I am surrounded by, the people whom I come in contact with, the 100’s of people who create with us, the beautiful people who follow my business social media platforms are people who believe in collaboration, lifting up their fellow man/woman, and cheering for success. There is NEVER EVER any blessing (personal or in business) in tearing someone down, so if there are people who do that, I just keep them in my prayers.
But HOW? Practical things I could actually use to overcome the WHAT. Have you seen that “Jump” motivational speech the fabulous Steve Harvey gave to his studio audience what could be a couple of years ago now? I’ll link it below just in case you haven’t watched it. I went back and re-watched (it’s SO worth the 6 minutes to watch or re-watch) and I bought the book! Im a book nerd for reals! I highlighted this book so much it’s mostly pink now…. here are a few nuggets:
“Jumping is taking a risk, a leap of faith toward your dreams…… it is embracing the ambition that God has put in your imagination and you making a commitment to manifest it in your life.”
“What you see in your imagination is tied to your gift…..your gift is the thing that you do the absolute best with the least amount of effort.”
Great stuff huh? and that’s just a snippet! It truly is a wonderful book. You can grab a copy (afflnk) here: Jump: Take the Leap of Faith to Achieve Your Life of Abundance
Another book by Mel Robbins called the 5 Second Rule was also recommended to me by a dear soul sister. The concept of overcoming fear with just a few second of courage wasn’t a foreign concept to me but this book really solidifies the idea with real life examples of the rule in use and the science behind it. If you caught my Facebook Live regarding Virtual workshop rollout, I literally said out loud before I hit the “Go Live” button “5-4-3-2-1-GO!” The concept of the rule is you have 5 seconds to put into action things you KNOW you should do before your brain shuts down the idea. Like laundry as a really simple example…. I do not really feel like doing laundry but unless we all wanna be running around in our birthday suits it’s 5-4-3-2-1-GO! I have to say I’ve been implementing it daily and it does work.
I’ve also started carrying around a small notebook with me and when ideas and thoughts that have the potential of moving me personally, our family, my business forward I write them
down and come back and revisit them to see what actions need to happen to move forward. And lastly MY PLANNER! I have a mad obsession with all things office supply related, I will buy the most beautiful planner on the planet and never actually use it. Anyone? Anyone? It’s been a wee bit amazing to me (the easily distracted, 2000 thoughts per mili-second creative) how much more I actually get done when I WRITE IT DOWN and PLAN IT OUT. It really is true “Every minute you spend in planning saves 10 minutes in execution; this gives you a 1,000 percent return on your energy!” – Brian Tracy
So, as in all things, God was correct-a-mundo and as it turns out I did get a big flashing neon sign “You already know, so DO it”. New skills take time to become habit, but I’m gonna keep on jumping and 5-4-3-2-1-GO!ing when I need that extra push of courage.
Directly below is the Steve Harvey jump video I mentioned earlier – an incredible 6 minutes and 34 seconds.
Wishing you the 5 second of courage you need to just JUMP! and move from the THINKing to the DOing because the greatest things are just on the other side of fear.
